Miles Squiers on His Creative Process and Musical Evolution

Miles Squiers, an emerging artist known for his distinctive blend of R&B and Soul, opens up about the intricacies of his songwriting process, the surprises of his musical journey, and the freedom he experiences in exploring new sounds.
When it comes to deciding which songs make it onto an album or playlist, Miles shares, “Some songs make the cut because they are the best I’ve made over a period of time, and some make it because they fit the theme, sound, and/or feel of the album.” He states that it sometimes takes him a few weeks to determine whether a song is good enough to make the cut. “Other times,” he adds, “I’ll view a finished song as a ‘practice’ song, meaning it’s pretty good but it was really just practice to get me to where I want to be sonically.”

Reflecting on some unexpected successes, Miles Squiers shares, “I was really surprised by my 2020 song ‘WOAH” featuring Morgan Le Prince. It was the first song I had released during COVID, and it caught the most traction a song like mine ever had for the first time.” He continues, “It was also accompanied by a music video that helped it reach more people, but that song must’ve just hit people at the right time.” Another memorable moment for Miles came with his song “Alright,” which he states, “was appreciated by one of my friends who was a top recruit for tennis out of high school. He wanted to use my song in a montage for his documentary. That was also a very unexpected thing to come from one of my songs.”

Discussing his current approach to making music, Miles Squiers shares, “I’m blessed to be in the position where I’m allowed to change my sound as freely as I want.” He states that while some songs are prideful and truly represent his “sound,” others are more experimental. “For me, R&B and Soul will always be a part of my songs,” he shares. “Whether that comes from the subject matter or the mood of the song, I feel like that is always a part of my sound as an artist. I think when I get sick of a certain sound, that’s when I need to start evolving into something new.” Through his reflections, Miles Squiers provides insight into the deliberate yet organic nature of his creative process. His openness to experimentation, combined with a deep connection to R&B and Soul, continues to shape his evolving artistry.
